The command line and the directory structure is close enough to not be a huge issue. If you're not, OS X is a little different. I use a MBP regularly at work so I'm familiar with it. But then I think about dealing with OS X as a server or running VMWare Fusion and realize I like the MBP best as a laptop. It works well in that role except the MBP keyboard is bad enough that I routinely think I'll put it in the rack running something useful. The screen is larger and nicer than the two other laptops that sit in the rack as bare metal Linux servers. I have an old MBP that I use to ssh into the servers and run a browser to access the web consoles and applications. between all your iOS devices and all your Macs. And if you use a Mac as a desktop you get seamless cloud syncing of all your data including photos, calendar, notes, files, passwords, etc. The iOS integration using a Mac as a server just boils down to tools for managing a fleet of iOS devices. There’s no benefit to doing this under macOS over Linux though unless you have another reason to keep macOS running on it. So you could set it up to run nginx or whatever else you need.

One advantage to macs is you can install almost any package you can install on Linux through homebrew.

I kept macOS running on the bare metal so I could run a few Mac-only packages I use regularly that need GPU acceleration and so it can run the Apple cacheing service for software updates. I do have a Mac mini sitting in a rack running a bunch of Linux, Windows and a few macOS VMs inside of VMWare fusion.

I use Macs as my development workstations, I do a lot of embedded, IoT and PCB design work, but as far as server use goes they’re not really that useful. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware.
